چکیده

In this paper, we present a hierarchical spatial model for the analysis of geographical variation in mortality between the Italian provinces in the year 2001, according to gender, age class, and cause of death. When analysing counts data specific to geographical locations, classical empirical rates or standardised mortality ratios may produce estimates that show a very high level of overdispersion due to the effect of spatial autocorrelation among the observations, and due to the presence of heterogeneity among the population sizes. We adopt a Bayesian approach and a Markov chain Monte Carlo computation with the goal of making more consistent inferences about the quantities of interest. While considering information for the year 1991, we also take into account a temporal effect from the previous geographical pattern. Results have demonstrated the flexibility of our proposal in evaluating specific aspects of a counts spatial process, such as the clustering effect and the heterogeneity effect. 1 Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie per Ambiente e Territorio, Università degli Studi del Molise, Contrada Fonte Lappone, 86090 Pesche (Isernia), Italy.Tel.: +39.0874.404170; Fax: +399.0874.404123; E-mail: [email protected]. 2 Dipartimento di Scienze Demografiche. تنظیم نقشه خطر نسبی مرگ کودکان زیر یک‌سال مناطق روستایی کشور در سال 1380 و 1385: مقایسه روش‌های حداکثر درستنمایی و بیزی

Background and objective: Disease or mortality mapping are statistical methods aimed at providing precise estimates of rates across geographical maps. The aim of this research is to improve the precision of relative risk (RR) estimates of infant mortality (IM) for different rural areas, using empirical and full Bayesian methods. Methods: Infant mortality data were extracted from the vital ...

Genetic analysis of castor (Ricinus communis L.) using ISSR markers

Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is one of the most ancient medicinal oil crops in the world. It has been vastly distributed in different parts of Iran. In the present study, the inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used to evaluate the molecular genetic diversity among and within 12 castor accessions collected from 7 regions of Iran. Totally, 16 ISSR primers amplified 166 loci...

Bayesian Analysis of Geographical Variation in Disease Risk

This paper reviews methods for mapping geographical variation in disease incidence and mortality. Recent results in Bayesian hierarchical modelling of relative risk are discussed. Two approaches to relative risk estimation, along with the related computational procedures, are described and compared. The first is an empirical Bayes approach that uses a technique of penalized log-likelihood maxim...

Temporal and geographical trends in infant, neonatal and post-neonatal mortality in Italy between 1991 and 2009

BACKGROUND Infant mortality is a key indicator of child and population health. The aim of this study is to analyse the trends in infant mortality rates (IMRs) and their components (neonatal mortality rates-NMRs and post-neonatal mortality rates-PNMRs) from 1991 to 2009 both at the national level and across the three Italian large geographical macro-areas (North, Center, South). METHODS Using ...

Bayesian spatial analysis of demographic survey data: An application to contraceptive use at first sexual intercourse

In this paper we analyze the spatial patterns of the risk of unprotected sexual intercourse for Italian women during their initial experience with sexual intercourse. We rely on geo-referenced survey data from the Italian Fertility and Family Survey, and we use a Bayesian approach relying on weakly informative prior distributions. Our analyses are based on a logistic regression model with a mul...
